This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use Curio to discover facts, explore categories, save discoveries, and receive optional reminders. In this policy, “Curio,” “the app,” and “we” refer to the Curio application and the team responsible for it, reachable at the contact above.
This policy covers Curio's current features. It does not automatically cover other applications or all activities on planebyte.com merely because it is hosted on that domain. Any other app covered by a shared policy must be expressly identified, with its own information-handling practices explained.
This policy covers the Curio app. For information about browsing this page, including website hosting, fonts and optional analytics, see PlaneByte’s website Privacy Policy.
Privacy overview
- You can use Curio without creating an account.
- The fact catalog and artwork in the current app are bundled with the app and can be browsed offline.
- Saved facts, dismissed facts, reading history, activity, and preferences are stored locally.
- The current app does not send this local reading information to a Curio-operated server.
- The current app does not display advertising or implement product analytics, a separate crash-reporting service, subscriptions, or in-app purchases.
- Reminders are optional and are scheduled on your device.
- You choose whether to share a fact, visit an external source, or contact support.
Local storage does not mean that every service on your device operates without processing information. Your operating system, app store, backup service, email provider, and any external services you choose to use have their own practices, as explained below.
Information handled by Curio
| Information | Examples | Where it is handled | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saved discoveries | Identifiers of facts you save or remove from Saved. | Local app storage. | Maintain your saved collection. |
| Dismissed facts | Identifiers of facts you dismiss. | Local app storage. | Avoid showing those facts again and exclude them from reminders. |
| Reading history and activity | Fact identifiers and local dates on which facts are read. | Local app storage. | Support reading history, daily activity, and curiosity streaks. |
| Preferences | Reminder enablement, frequency, time, and haptic-feedback preferences. | Local app storage. | Apply your chosen app settings. |
| Notification information | Notification permission status, scheduled times, fact content, and fact identifiers. | The app and your operating system's notification services. | Schedule reminders and open the appropriate fact when you tap one. |
| Search and navigation input | Search terms, selected categories, and the fact currently being viewed. | Processed locally in the current app. | Find and display relevant content. |
| Support information you provide | Your email address, message, and any attachments or device details you choose to send. | Our support mailbox and the email providers used to send and receive messages. | Respond to questions, investigate problems, and handle privacy requests. |
Curio does not ask for your name, phone number, identity documents, payment details, or an account password to browse facts. The current app does not include an advertising identifier integration. If you voluntarily send personal information to support, the support sections of this policy apply.
How information is used
Information handled by Curio is used to:
- Display facts and categories and respond to your searches and navigation.
- Maintain saved discoveries and respect dismissed facts.
- Record local reading activity and calculate your curiosity streak.
- Apply preferences and schedule reminders when you enable them.
- Respond to communications and troubleshoot issues you report.
- Respond to privacy requests and meet applicable obligations.
We do not sell your personal information or use your local reading history for targeted advertising. The current app does not provide public profiles, social posting, or cross-device account synchronization.
Notifications and device permissions
Curio asks for notification permission when you choose to set up reminders. Reminders contain fact content and are scheduled on the device. The current implementation does not register the user with a Curio remote-push service. Your operating system controls delivery, notification visibility, and permission status.
If lock-screen previews are enabled, fact text can be visible before the phone is unlocked. You control this through Curio's reminder preferences and your phone's notification and lock-screen settings. Disabling notifications does not prevent you from browsing facts.
The Android app uses notification-related system capabilities, vibration for optional haptic feedback, and boot-related support for scheduled reminders. Network-related capabilities support platform components and external actions; their presence is not a claim that local reading history is uploaded to us. Curio does not request access to your contacts, device location, camera, microphone, or photo library for its current features.
Platform services, backups, and other providers
Curio is built with React Native and Expo components for functions such as app navigation, local storage, fonts, and notifications. We do not operate a Curio account backend, cloud content service, or cloud synchronization service for the current release. Local data is not intentionally submitted to an Expo push-notification service by the current reminder implementation.
Google Play, Android, Apple services where applicable, device manufacturers, and your email or sharing providers may independently process technical information, store interactions, backups, or diagnostics according to their settings and policies. For example, Google Play may process installation and app-quality information as part of its platform services. Such platform processing should not be confused with Curio implementing its own analytics or crash-reporting SDK.
Device backups
Android system backup is enabled in the current Curio build. Depending on your Google account, Android version, and device settings, app data may be included in a backup or transferred to another device. We do not operate this backup service. Uninstalling or clearing the app does not necessarily remove previously created system backups, and a backup may restore app data when you reinstall. Manage backup settings and deletion through your device and backup provider. Similar platform-managed backup or transfer behavior may apply on other supported platforms.
Services you choose to use, including support email and device backups, may process information outside your country. This policy does not claim that those providers store all information in India.
Relevant platform policies include:
Storage and security
Curio stores preferences and reading-related records in local application storage and relies on the operating system's app-storage protections. The current app does not add a dedicated application-level encrypted vault for those records. Protect your device with an appropriate screen lock and review your device backup settings.
Support communications are handled through email services. Avoid sending passwords, payment-card details, identity documents, or other information unnecessary for a support request. Where supporting material is useful, remove unrelated personal details before sending it.
No storage or communication system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. If you believe information associated with Curio has been exposed, contact us using the address in this policy.
Retention
- Saved facts and preferences: retained locally until you change or remove them or clear the app's data.
- Dismissals and reading activity: retained locally to support filtering and streaks until the app's data is cleared.
- Scheduled notifications: managed on the device and replaced or canceled when reminders are updated or disabled.
- Support correspondence: retained for as long as reasonably needed to address your request, handle related follow-up, and meet applicable legal or security obligations. You can request deletion through support.
- System backups: retained according to the platform's backup settings and policies; these are separate from the live app installation.
We do not operate a central database containing your local saved collection, dismissed facts, or reading history. We therefore cannot remotely inspect or erase those local records through a support email.
Deletion and control of your information
The current version of Curio does not support creating a user account, so there is no Curio account to close or delete. You can control local data as follows:
Remove a saved fact
Use the bookmark control to remove it from your saved collection.
Disable reminders
Turn off reminders in Curio's settings. You can also revoke notification permission through your device settings. Notifications already visible on the device can be dismissed through the system notification interface.
Clear local data on Android
Open your phone's Settings, select Apps, select Curio, open Storage or Storage & cache, and choose Clear storage or Clear data. Exact labels differ by Android version and device manufacturer. This resets saved facts, dismissed facts, history, streaks, and preferences for that installation.
Uninstall or remove backup copies
Uninstalling removes the local app installation and its local app data. On iOS, where available, deleting an app is different from offloading it: offloading may retain app data. Manage any system backup copies separately through your device or backup provider to avoid later restoration.
Request deletion of support information
Email contact@planebyte.com and identify the support information you want deleted. Use the address associated with your earlier correspondence where possible. We may request limited information needed to verify the request. We will explain if any information must be retained for applicable obligations.
Support communications
Contacting support is optional. If you contact us, we receive the email address and content you send, including attachments. We use this information to respond and investigate the issue you describe. We may ask for the app version, operating-system version, and device model when relevant to a reported problem; these details are not required for ordinary browsing.
Our email provider processes messages to provide email delivery and storage. We may also disclose information where required by applicable law or where necessary to address security incidents or protect legal rights. We do not use support correspondence for targeted advertising.
Children's privacy
Curio's current browsing features do not ask users to register or submit personal information. We do not knowingly solicit children's personal information through support. If you believe a child has supplied personal information to us, contact us so we can investigate and address deletion where appropriate.
This statement does not replace the app's age rating or target-audience disclosures in its store listing. Parents and guardians should review those disclosures and supervise sharing or support communications when appropriate.
Privacy requests and regional rights
Depending on your location and the law that applies, you may have rights relating to personal information, such as access, correction, or deletion. Contact us to make a request concerning information we hold, such as support correspondence. We will consider the request under applicable requirements.
For information stored only on your device, use the controls described in the deletion section. Device backups, app-store records, and information held independently by external services must be managed with the relevant provider. We do not need your reading history or a copy of your saved collection to answer an ordinary privacy inquiry.
This website and browser use
This page describes the Curio app. Visiting planebyte.com is a separate website interaction. Website hosting, access logs, cookies, analytics, contact forms, or embedded services, if used by the site, must be described in the website's applicable privacy and cookie disclosures. This policy does not assert that the entire website operates without them.
If you use a browser version of Curio, reading-related information may be stored in your browser's local storage instead of native app storage. Clearing the site's data in browser settings removes that local copy. Website-hosting practices still apply to requests made to load that version.
Changes to this policy
We will review and update this policy when Curio's information-handling practices change. The date at the top identifies the current policy version. Before introducing features such as user accounts, remote content, advertising, analytics, or purchases, we will review the data involved and update relevant disclosures and choices. Future plans are not a statement that those features exist in the current app.
Where an additional notice or permission is required, updating this page alone will not replace that requirement.
